Especially in the cold season, when many viruses are circulating around and the airways are attacked by cold air, bronchitis occurs frequently and it is rather easy to get infected. The triggers for bronchitis are usually cold and flu viruses. There are no drugs against these viruses, and antibiotics do not help either, as they only work against bacteria.
Thyme has been used as a gentle but effective help against bronchitis since the Middle Ages. However, its diverse effects and areas of the application still stimulate research today, as it is one of the most valuable medicinal plants against colds.
Thyme herb contains, among other things, essential oil (with thymol and carvacrol as the most important compounds), flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic monoterpenes. Thymol is the main component of the essential oil with a share of 30 to 55%. Thymol has a strong disinfectant effect, namely bactericidal and fungicidal, while Carvacrol has a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Due to its combination of active ingredients, thyme oil is a traditional herbal medicine that is used internally to dissolve mucus in the event of a cold-related cough. External applications such as baths or rubs should alleviate cold symptoms.
It loosens mucus from the airways and can thereby relieve coughs.
It relaxes the bronchial muscles and makes breathing easier.
It has an antiviral and antibacterial effect - it fights pathogens and counteracts inflammation.
It has a soothing and relaxing effect on the bronchi.
Pharmacological studies have shown that essential thyme oil has an antimicrobial, antiseptic, strong antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory effect. New research found that the essential oil also stimulates the immune system; the values are about 20 to 30 percent below those of Echinacea.
For inhalation against coughs and bronchitis, it is recommended to mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 7 to 10 drops of thyme oil and stir it into about 1 liter of hot water. Inhale 3 to 4 times a day, depending on the intensity of the symptoms. The inhalation of essential oils is a valuable and proven home remedy, especially for acute respiratory diseases.
A mixture of the following essential oils is recommended for rubbing in when having acute bronchitis: Take 50 ml organic rosehip oil as a carrier oil and add the following essential oils: 10 drops of Hyssop and 5 drops of each thyme oil, chamomile, mint, and lavender. Rub it into the chest and back several times a day.
If you have a cold and you would like to use a topical treatment, it is advisable to massage the soles of the feet and the kidney area with thyme oil (mix with organic rosehip oil if necessary).
Against tonsillitis, you may add a teaspoon of salt and 2 drops of thyme oil to a glass of lukewarm water to prepare a gargle liquid. Gargle with it several times a day.
