More and more people put their trust in the healing power of plants instead of going to the doctor immediately in case of minor complaints. For centuries, oregano has been considered an effective weapon against various ailments. Oregano oil is a purely herbal remedy. It is worth learning a little more about oregano because the oregano essential oil provides noticeable relief at the first sign of slight discomfort and deterioration can be avoided.
Oregano oil is the concentrated healing power of the herb Origanum vulgare and is considered a very powerful natural antibiotic, but it also has an antimicrobial, antiparasitic, analgesic, antispasmodic and antifungal effect.
The main ingredient of oregano oil is:
• Carvacrol: shows strong antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
Oregano essential oil is very often used for therapeutic purposes due to its healing properties against all three infectious organisms - bacteria, viruses and fungi.
Oregano essential oil is an exceptionally powerful natural antibiotic. There have been many studies on the effects of oregano oil on bacteria. Interestingly, pure oregano oil can kill or at least inhibit a wide variety of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. A recent study found that oregano can be used significantly better than any of the 18 antibiotics currently used to treat infections with MRSA staphylococci. MRSA staphylococci are multi-resistant bacteria that have already developed resistance to conventional antibiotics and therefore cause many thousands of deaths each year. In contrast, the polyphenols (antioxidants) contained in oregano destroy such bacteria that are resistant to conventional antibiotics.
Studies and practical experience from hospitals show that oregano oil can prevent and treat effectively antibiotic-resistant germs (multi-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). The compound Carvacrol of oregano oil has been shown to be effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. (Nostro et al., 2004).
Oregano oil can therefore be used very well for bacterial infections in the ears and airways. However, oregano oil not only kills pathogens. The oil is also said to inhibit the formation of inflammatory messengers, which indicates that it fights disease at various levels.
Oregano oil is not only very effective against bacteria but it can also be used against a wide variety of viral diseases such as flu, cold, runny nose, cough, pneumonia, and herpes diseases. There are first reports that Covid 19 disease was successfully cured with essential organic oil.
The use of oregano oil against nail fungus, vaginal fungus, or Candida is known as an old home remedy. The external application of the oregano oil has an "extreme anti-fungal effect".
The oregano oil consists mainly of terpinen-4-ol and induces high cytotoxicity. It can be effective in inducing the inhibition of cancer cell growth. The compound carvacrol from oregano oil damages effectively the DNA of cancer cells and causes them to die. Carvacrol can help kill cancer cells by acting on enzymes that destroy the cells (Hotta et al., 2010). This study has given more evidence of carvacrol's effectiveness against cancer cells.
On a global level, oregano oil has been used in various traditional medical systems for conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, candida fungi, rheumatism, herpes simplex, insect bites, muscle tension and toothache, diarrhea, and upset stomach.
