Yarrow - a little history
White yarrow is a perennial herb with white flowers and a strong specific sweet aroma. The name "Achillea" originates from the name of the Thessalian hero Achilles - the bravest of all the Greeks who participated in the Trojan War. According to legends, Achilles and ancient warriors used yarrow to apply to wounds, cuts, to stop internal and external bleeding, to increase blood clotting and to soothe pain. Millefolium' means 'thousand leaves', which derives from the small fine spreading leaves of the plant. Ancient Europeans called the herb "war licorice" and also prepared a healing ointment for their wounds received on the battlefield. In England, some of the old names of this plant "soldier's wound herb" and "knight's yarrow" also speak of its ability to heal wounds. In Chinese medicine, yarrow is a symbol of perfect balance between yin and yang.Ancient legends tell that the herb was also used to make love magic. In the old herbal books, the white yarrow was called "deliverance from all troubles" because of the belief in its magical ability to help where there is no hope of healing. To this day, white yarrow is one of the most popular plants in folk medicine for the treatment of the so-called "female diseases" such as uterine bleeding, painful menstruation, white discharge, uterine fibroids. It is also a very popular herb as a hemostatic and anti-inflammatory agent - internally (for stomach and hemorrhoidal bleeding) and externally (for wounds, nosebleeds and gums) and as a soothing agent for stomach pains, ulcers, gastritis.
Supports women's health
Yarrow essential oil is considered a universal aid in the treatment of gynecological problems. And this is no accident, because yarrow oil has a natural amenogogonic effect (stimulating menstruation), helps with amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), uterine bleeding, menstrual pain and relieves menopausal symptoms. That's why we highly recommend every woman to have yarrow essential oil in her "arsenal" for supporting women's health. Mix 5 drops of yarrow oil with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil or aloe gel and apply topically to the abdomen or add 3 to 5 drops to a warm bath.
Accelerates wound healing
The antiseptic and wound-healing properties of yarrow oil make it a natural remedy for cuts, wounds, burns, skin infections or irritations. It is characterized by the ability to form a protective coating on the wound and to activate blood platelets and leukocytes at the place where it is applied, thus protecting against the penetration of microbes, viruses and fungi and can prevent wound infection. This is why many healing salves include yarrow as a key ingredient. If you want to speed up wound healing and prevent infection, apply 2 to 3 drops diluted with a carrier oil to the affected area twice a day.
It has a hemostatic effect
Yarrow essential oil is known to have pronounced hemostatic properties and can help reduce external and internal bleeding. In addition, it has powerful astringent properties that cause contractions in the blood vessels, thus reducing bleeding or hemorrhage.
Provides emotional balance
The warm floral herbal aroma of the oil has a calming effect and can be a real blessing for people who suffer from insomnia, excessive stress and crave some peace and a full sound sleep. The properties of the oil make it useful for those days when you need to slow down, and diffusing or inhaling is the easiest way to benefit from its calming effect. Whenever you want to stimulate a sense of calm and harmony, put a drop of yarrow essential oil in your palm, rub your hands together and inhale deeply.
Improves skin health
Yarrow essential oil is a perfect oil for skin care routine. It helps to moisturize and restore the healthy appearance of the skin while working to reduce skin imperfections. In aromatherapy skin care, yarrow oil can be successfully applied to problem skin, acne, eczema, to prevent scarring and cellulite. To reap the revitalizing benefits of the oil, add to your cream or face wash, shower gel or lotion, or simply apply 1 to 2 drops diluted with a carrier oil to face, chest, neck and hands each morning and evening.
MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF YARROW OIL
A 2012 clinical study published in the Journal of Medicinal Plants Research evaluated the antibacterial activity of yarrow essential oil. The results show that A. Millefolium oil exhibits strong antibacterial activity against the gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus.
Several studies have shown that topical application of various types of yarrow extracts improves the healing process of various skin injuries. Earlier studies also highlighted the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and moisturizing effects of yarrow extract in the treatment of topical skin inflammations.
In 2017 and 2018 studies, researchers concluded that yarrow oil improves skin cell regeneration, thereby reducing the healing time of open wounds.
