HISTORY OF MANDARIN

Mandarin is a small thin-skinned variety of the orange species. Its origin dates back to the indigenous people living in Southeast Asia. Later, mandarin is said to have been spread to the West along the trade routes intervening in the Mediterranean region.

Citrus reticulata is an evergreen tree that has white blossoms and bears sweet citrus fruits. The mandarin fruit itself is quite cherished in the world of culinary and is often used for fine desserts and is also added to beverages. Mandarins make a great snack, too!

A fun fact is that in ancient times, the mandarin peel was regarded as an essential element that guides qi, the life energy according to traditional Chinese medicine. It had great significance in folk medicine healing potions. Additionally, ayurveda practitioners use mandarin oil in therapeutic massages and soaking baths.

Green mandarin essential oil is taken from the peel of the mandarin fruit through the process of cold-pressing, but did you know that a mature mandarin tree can yield up to 79 kilograms of fruit?

Supports healthy sleep

By imposing relaxation, mandarin oil can improve sleep length and sleep quality. As mandarin oil has slight sedative properties, it can reduce symptoms of anxiety and restlessness, which are often the cause of insomnia. You can add lavender oil and diffuse the aroma blend before bedtime. You can also dilute a few drops in a carrier oil and rub it into the temples for an immediate effect.

Helps create a positive mindset

Along with being a great relaxant that helps us slow down, mandarin oil can help us cultivate a more positive mindset. Diffusing mandarin oil mixed with other citrus oils such as sweet orange or lime can help you feel happier and more energized to kick off your day. And, always remember to breathe. Even after the darkest nights, the sun rises for a new day.

Good for dull skin types

Mandarin oil is particularly good for skin conditions such as dullness, loss of radiance and dehydration. Restore the youthful look on your face and nourish and replenish your skin.

Can be used as a natural home cleaner

Though it may not be one of the most powerful antibacterial agents, mandarin oil can still make a great solution to use as a natural home cleaner. Use white vinegar or pure alcohol as a solvent. Green mandarin oil will also help you get rid of unpleasant odours and can serve as a mild bug repellent for mosquitoes.

Encourages healthy digestion and metabolism

Do you suffer from regular bloating and an upset stomach? The mandarin essential oil can be very supportive of your GI tract. You can ease after-meal bloating and cramps by rubbing a few drops of mandarin oil diluted in a carrier oil. Massage clockwise for several minutes.

Other essential oils that make good digestive support are ginger, black pepper, dragonhead and coriander.

MEDICINAL USES OF MANDARIN OIL

One particular study on Citrus reticulata measured the anti-ageing capability of that essential oil through an examination of mandarin oil’s ability to inhibit the major enzymes hyaluronidase, collagenase and amylase associated with skin ageing.

Through various tests and using a complex methodology, scientists concluded that Citrus reticulata can be utilized as a promising anti-aging agent for skincare products.

A 2020 study suggests that mandarin oils can improve mood and sleep latency. During the study, the EEG activity of 10 male and 10 female volunteers was measured. In the end, it turned out that inhalation of a particular concentration of mandarin oils can decrease alpha and beta wave powers, and increase theta wave power, associated with sleep.

The antibacterial activity against fungal microorganisms, including bacteria strains such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella abony, and Staphylococcus aureus was measured in this 2021 study. Where as green mandarin oil exhibited less antibacterial activity compared to cinnamon and grapefruit oil, it scored significantly as an antioxidant.
