HISTORY OF COPAIBA
Copaiba is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters in height. It has yellow blossoms and red fruits. A single tree is said to offer up to 40 kilograms of oil per season.
Initially, when tapped, copaiba trees yield a clear and colorless resin. Then the oleoresin thickens and darkens upon its contact with air. The balsamic resin is very similar to the one produced by sandalwood.
Copaiba oil has long been used as a folk medicine among South American tribes. It was mainly used to heal infections, sore throat, blood pressure, respiratory issues and to support the immune system. Additionally, the Copaiba resins were burned in healing ceremonies. In Panama for example, copaiba resin mixed with honey was believed to ward off bad magic spells on newborns. (Wikipedia)
Nowadays, the Amazon region supplies more than 95% of the raw materials all over the world. It is estimated that the annual production of copaiba oil in the Amazon region is around 500 tons. And did you know that Copaiba trees can live up to 400 years?
