Due to its main therapeutic constituents, copaiba essential oil is good for treating several conditions:

  • Supports the respiratory system
  • Relieves joint and muscle pain
  • Combats acne
  • Aids teeth health and overall oral hygiene
  • Helps you relax and de-stress

HISTORY OF COPAIBA

Copaiba is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters in height. It has yellow blossoms and red fruits. A single tree is said to offer up to 40 kilograms of oil per season.

Initially, when tapped, copaiba trees yield a clear and colorless resin. Then the oleoresin thickens and darkens upon its contact with air. The balsamic resin is very similar to the one produced by sandalwood.

Copaiba oil has long been used as a folk medicine among South American tribes. It was mainly used to heal infections, sore throat, blood pressure, respiratory issues and to support the immune system. Additionally, the Copaiba resins were burned in healing ceremonies. In Panama for example, copaiba resin mixed with honey was believed to ward off bad magic spells on newborns. (Wikipedia)

Nowadays, the Amazon region supplies more than 95% of the raw materials all over the world. It is estimated that the annual production of copaiba oil in the Amazon region is around 500 tons. And did you know that Copaiba trees can live up to 400 years?

Another interesting fact is that beta-caryophyllene, which is one of the main compounds of copaiba oil, is also found in cannabis oil. Do not worry, copaiba oil is safe and free of psychotropic substances.

WHAT IS COPAIBA OIL GOOD FOR?

On an emotional level, copaiba essential oil can help soothe intense feelings and aid relaxation practices. It can also be applied topically to the skin to promote a clear and healthy complexion. It is particularly recommended for oily and combination skin types.

Of all essential oils, copaiba oil contains the highest concentration of β-caryophyllene, which is a cannabinoid and a sesquiterpene. (It does not contain psychoactive cannabinoids.) Thanks to the high content of that constituent, copaiba supports the health of the cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems.

MEDICINAL USES OF COPAIBA OIL

One study from 2016 experimented to further examine the biological activities of copaiba essential oils. Study results indicate that copaiba oils demonstrate peripheral and central antinociceptive effects, which lays the foundation for further exploration of copaiba oil to be used as an analgesic (pain-relieving) agent.

The antibacterial activity of copaiba oil against oral bacteria was deeply investigated by Brazilian scientists. Strains of Streptococcus sp. were isolated from dental plaque collected from patients in the Brazilian city of Manaus. Volunteers were between 21 and 35 years old, of both genders and had caries and gingivitis. Participants were given copaiba oil-infused chlorhexidine gel. Ultimately, the study concluded that copaiba can be used for managing oral plaque.

Copaiba exhibits neuroprotective properties and opens the door for further exploration in using copaiba oil in treating neurodegenerative diseases such as MS, according to this study. The latter claims to provide the first experimental evidence that copaiba oil has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects on the damaged central nervous system.

COPAIBA OIL - BENEFITS

Supports the respiratory system

Copaiba oil can be of invaluable support to those who suffer from cold and flu, because of its secretolytic(breaking up secretions) and anti-inflammatory effects. When inhaled, copaiba essential oil can loosen the tension in the chest and alleviate breathing.

Furthermore, as it has the potency to break down phlegm, copaiba oil can be successfully incorporated into the treatment of respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and even some types of asthma.

Relieves joint and muscle pain

Copaiba essential oil may be used as a natural pain relief agent, because of its antinociceptive properties. The high content of beta-caryophyllene, which is a natural analgesic present in CBD oil, makes copaiba oil perfect for treating acute and long-term pain. Moreover, there are claims that long-term usage of copaiba oil does not pose a major hazard to your health (or side effects).

If you suffer from an arthritic disease, stiffness and soreness in the muscles and joints, consider adding copaiba oil. It can relieve pain and increase your stamina.

Combats acne

Copaiba essential oil is a must-have for those who have an acne-prone skin type. When applied topically, copaiba oil can alleviate acne breakouts and soothe inflammation.

In March 2012 a study was conducted to test copaiba efficacy in dealing with acne vulgaris. Volunteers were asked to apply a copaiba-infused gel for 21 consecutive days. Study results indicate that the essential oil from Copaiba might be used as a topical treatment for mild acne.

Supports teeth health and overall oral hygiene

Copaiba essential oil promotes oral health when used regularly as a mouthwash or added to your toothpaste. Copaiba was found effective in combating Streptococcus strains. Streptococcus is mainly known to cause tooth decay and cavities. By incorporating copaiba oil, you can support your oral health and even deal with bad breath, caused by bacteria in the mouth.

Helps you relax and de-stress

Copaiba essential oil can help calm and soothe anxiety and panic attacks. It is a great oil to add to your de-stressing rituals. In Ayurveda, copaiba is associated with the heart chakra, which when unbalanced can lead to feelings of guilt and self-loathing. Sweet and woody, copaiba oil instills contentment and relaxation, without having a sedative effect.
