MOLDOVIAN DRAGONHEAD - A LITTLE HISTORY

The Moldavian dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica) belongs to the family Lamiales. The Latin name "Dracocephalum" literally translates as "dragon's head" and very accurately reflects the shape of the corolla of its flower. Behind the name of this still relatively unknown plant lies an extraordinary healing power, embodying an immense spectrum of healing properties. In ancient Indian and Tibetan medicine, the plant was used as a tonic, prescribed for migraines, toothaches and colds. In folk medicine, it is used to stimulate the appetite and improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, improve kidney function and stimulate the activity of the adrenal cortex (this property is manifested mainly due to citral). The plant is used in the form of tea as a prophylactic in the fight against viral infections.

Promotes relaxation and sleep

Moldavian dragonhead oil is a health booster for the nervous system. Clinical studies reveal that inhaling the oil improves mental and emotional health, reduces stress and anxiety levels, and increases alertness. To calm your mind, rub on your temples, inhale directly from the bottle, or diffuse 5 to 7 drops of Moldavian Dragonhead Oil in your office or by your bed for a healthy night's sleep

Moldavian dragonhead oil exhibits an analgesic (pain-relieving) effect but without causing unwanted effects. It can naturally affect key mechanisms of the inflammatory process and reduce pain and discomfort. in headache. Thanks to its ability to relax tense muscles and improve blood circulation, it can have a pain-relieving effect in conditions caused by muscle tension. Adding a few drops of essential oil to a hot bath can be a relaxing way to reduce headaches. Alternatively, you can add 4-5 drops to a diffuser to create an aromatic and healing atmosphere in the room.

Supports heart health

It can lower high blood pressure by increasing dilation and healthy blood circulation and relax the heart. In addition, the oil calms strong emotions and lowers high stress levels that often lead to cardiovascular problems. Apply 2 to 4 drops (diluted in a carrier oil) topically to the area over the heart or take internally by placing 1 drop under the tongue.

Acts as a tonic and immunostimulator

Moldavian dragonhead essential oil can help to tone overall health and boost immune system function. Its beneficial effect on the immune system is mainly due to the citral compound. According to research, it is citral that brings the purifying properties of Moldavian dragonhead, which is key in maintaining a healthy immune system.

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF MOLDOVIAN DRAGONHEAD OIL

A 2013 study published by Pharmaceutical sciences aimed to investigate the antinociceptive (pain-relieving) effect of Dracocephalum moldavica essential oil in various experimental models in mice and rats. According to GC/MS analysis data for D. moldavica oil, the main components are terpenoids, in which citral has the highest percentage. It has been proven that citral has peripheral antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects and has a beneficial effect on pain management. The results of the study indicate that the essential oil of Moldavian dragonhead possesses analgesic properties, suggesting that it may represent a potential therapeutic option for the treatment of pain-related diseases.

An article published by Plants 2022 analyzed and compared the chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of Dracocephalum moldavica essential oil and its hydrolate. The article concludes that the tested essential oil and its hydrolate can be used as antimicrobial agents to extend the shelf life of foods, but also can be used as a natural agent in the composition of antimicrobial formulations in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

The aim of a clinical study conducted in Iran was to investigate the chemical composition, antimicrobial activity and antioxidant properties of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and Moldavian dragonhead (Deracocephalum moldavica) essential oils. Their antimicrobial activity was evaluated against four important foodborne bacteria: Salmonella typhimorium, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. The main results show strong antimicrobial effects of both oils against the tested bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus was the most sensitive bacterium to both essential oils, although the antibacterial effect of lemon balm essential oil was stronger than that of Moldavian dragonhead. In addition, the results showed that both essential oils have remarkable antioxidant properties. In conclusion, both essential oils are a suitable alternative as a source of natural preservatives in the food industry.

Another study evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial activity of D. moldavica essential oil. The result showed that all tested microorganisms were strongly inhibited by the essential oil. The most sensitive microorganisms are Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and S. Epidermidis. Considering the susceptibility screening, it is possible that the activity of D. moldavica oil is mainly due to the presence of citral in its composition.

Behavioral studies in rats reported that Dracocephalum moldavica essential oil has a sedative effect. The in vivo study revealed high anxiolytic activity of the oil. Inhalation of the essential oil of Moldavian dragonhead in maximum concentrations does not differ significantly in many parameters from the action of the reference drug Diazepam. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that Moldavian dragonhead essential oil may represent a new natural product with significant sedative effects for aromatherapy.
