Coriander oil – a little history
The name of the coriander plant is derived from the Greek word "koriannon", which literally means "wood tree", derived from the Greek word "koros" (insect). The full botanical name means "a cultivated plant with the smell of bedbugs". Coriander is also mentioned in ancient Sanskrit written sources say that it grew in the gardens of ancient India about 7000 years ago. Coriander seeds were found in one of the tombs of the 21st dynasty of Egypt about 3000 years ago. According to historical sources, coriander was used by the ancient Greeks as an aphrodisiac. The Greek physician Dioscorides believed that consumption of the spice increased male potency. In Chinese mythology, the seeds of the coriander plant were believed to have the ability to grant immortality. In the 1001 Nights or Arabian Nights, a book created more than 1,000 years ago, coriander seeds are mentioned as part of a mixture that was believed to help a barren man have offspring.
Coriander is mentioned in the Bible, in the Old Testament (Exodus 17:31), where the description of the manna from heaven, with which Moses and his people were fed for 40 years while wandering in the desert, is very reminiscent of coriander seeds: " It was white and looked like coriander seed and it tasted like bannock mixed with honey”. In the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, coriander was added to love potions as it was believed to have aphrodisiac qualities and stimulate passion, especially when consumed with wine.
Helps relieve stress
A remarkable property of coriander oil is that it has both a tonic and calming effect on the nervous system. Its tonic effect comes from the fact that it stimulates the neural network in the brainstem, thereby awakening the brain and increasing concentration, while balancing the body's stress response system. Its chemical composition is similar to that of lavender, which accounts for its properties to calm and improve conditions such as hyperactivity, attention deficit, depression, nervous exhaustion, insomnia and fatigue.
Diffuse coriander seed oil on your desk or office to reduce high levels of stress and tension. When you need an easy and quick way to relax, apply the oil topically to the pulse points (neck and wrists) to create a sense of calm and harmony. In combination with a base oil, it is ideal for a relaxing massage at home.

Alternatively, you can diffuse coriander and ginger essential oils.

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF CORIANDER OIL
A 2011 clinical study investigated the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of Coriandrum sativum L. extract in Meriones shawi rats. The results suggest that it may reduce hyperglycemia and elevated insulin and LDL-cholesterol levels. Since coriander seed extract reduces atherosclerotic and increases cardioprotective indices, it may have a cardiovascular protective effect. The present study confirms the traditional use of coriander in diabetes.
In Iranian traditional medicine, the plant Coriandrum sativum is recommended to relieve insomnia. The aim of an in vivo study with Swiss albino mice published in the Iranian Journal of Medical Sciences was to determine whether extracts and essential oil of coriander seeds have sedative-hypnotic effects. Sleep latency and sleep duration are criteria for sleep. The conclusion states that the extracts and essential oil of coriander seeds have a sedative-hypnotic effect.
The present study was conducted to evaluate the diuretic activity of Coriandrum sativum seed extract in rats. The mechanism of action of the plant extract appears to be similar to that of Furosemide. The result shows that coriander seed extract has diuretic and saluretic activity, which confirms the use of coriander as a diuretic plant in the Moroccan pharmacopoeia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of coriander seed essential oil, its mode of action against Candida strains, and its potential synergism with amphotericin B. The oil showed fungicidal activity against Candida strains that resulted from damage to the cytoplasmic membrane. This study concludes that coriander seed oil may be useful in the development of new formulations for the treatment of candidiasis.
The clinical applications of benzodiazepines as anxiolytics are limited by their undesirable side effects. The aim of this study was to test whether the aqueous extract of Coriandrum sativum seeds has an anxiolytic effect in mice. In addition, its effect on spontaneous activity and neuromuscular coordination was assessed. The extract significantly reduced spontaneous activity and neuromuscular coordination compared to the control group. These results suggest that the aqueous extract of Coriandrum sativum seeds has an anxiolytic effect and may have potential sedative and muscle relaxant effects. A 2014 clinical study found that coriander seed essential oil has the ability to fight fungal infections in the oral cavity.
