Scotch pine – a little history

Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris) is an evergreen conifer from the Pine family, reaching a height of up to 40 m and an age of up to 600 years. It is found in most of the Northern Hemisphere at an altitude of up to 2200 m. During archaeological excavations in 1889 in the central city of the ancient Sumerian state, a thousand clay cuneiform tablets were found, one of which contained 15 medicinal recipes with plant substances, animal and mineral origin. This precious find, dating back 5 millennia, shows that the ancient Sumerian healers were well aware of the healing properties of plant oils and resins, using dried pine and fir needles for compresses and poultices. In Ancient Egypt, white pine resin was part of the composition and secret rituals of embalming. Pine resin was included in one of the most popular ancient Egyptian birth control recipes as a remedy against unwanted pregnancy. Some Native American tribes called the white pine "Guardian of the Sky", because of its height and the desire to always be higher and thus catch the sun's rays. This is a belief shared by many peoples who call him "The Lord of Light".

There are legends about "Siberian health and longevity" which is largely due to the unique climatic features of Siberia, also called the "green lungs of the planet". Its name is due to the evergreen northern beauty of the coniferous forests of white pine. The aroma of pine and fir branches disinfects the air, thanks to phytoncide volatile substances that are released from the needles. Coniferous therapy has been a proven method for fighting many diseases, as well as for their timely prevention for thousands of years.

Scotch pine essential oil is a great choice for toning and energizing the body, for calming nervous tension and agitation. Its fresh aroma gives a surge of new vitality and energy, increases energy levels, clears the mind of worries and restores mental balance. The aroma is perceived as a breath of fresh air. These qualities make white pine oil one of the most useful oils for meditation. If you need emergency therapy for those moments of lethargy, atony, and fatigue, diffuse white pine essential oil for 30 minutes. Feel the rush of fresh strength and energy for life.

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF SCOTCH PINE OIL

A 2018 study evaluated extracts from three different pine species for their inhibitory activity on enzymes associated with certain diseases. Ethanol extracts of each plant have been tested in vitro for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (enzyme inhibitor: antiamylase and antiglucosidase activity), the treatment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases (enzyme inhibition: anticholinesterase and antityrosinase activity). The results show that extracts from the three different pine species possess enzyme inhibitory activity in a dose-dependent manner and may have a positive effect on the treatment of diabetes mellitus and the symptoms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

A 2015 study published in Pharmacogn Mag. aimed to investigate the potential cytotoxicity of white pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Data from this report establish that Scots pine needle extract and Scots pine essential oil show some potential as a chemopreventive or chemotherapeutic agent for mammary tumors unresponsive to endocrine therapy.
