Angelica – a little history

Angelica, commonly referred to as "angel's herb," is a perennial plant. The Greek word "αγγελoς" (Angelos), a messenger named after Archangel Michael, is the source of the Latin name. Archangel Michael is thought to have shown up as a vision and given an explanation of the plant's miraculous properties. Angelica has a mysterious origin and an old meaning.

Several traditions surround this herb, one of which is that it was brought to Earth during the plague pandemic by Archangel Michael decades ago. Throughout this time, the herb saved a great deal of lives. An alternative theory suggests that the name "angel herb" may have originated from the delicate blooms that are arranged in an intricate umbel inflorescence, giving it a resemblance to a a majestic halo. Angelica was considered as a sacred herb by the Scandinavian people, having ,, angel powers’’ to deal with gastrointestinal problems. From its stem is made a musical instrument that resembles a flute.

Its lovely stems are candied and used as decorations, which is another fascinating truth about it. During the Middle Ages, knights applied a liquid extract prepared from angelica to their eyes and ears, believing it would improve their vision and hearing. Native Americans employed a variety of angelica species for ritual smoking, food, medicine, and intoxication throughout North America. Because of its capacity to balance the female body, angelica is regarded in Chinese medicine as the "feminine" ginseng.

It is thought to extend youth and the reproductive cycle while properly reestablishing the meridians' energy flow. The resulting pricey angelica oil is utilized in the tobacco, wine-alcohol, and confectionery sectors. It is also used to make digestive bitters and flavor liqueurs like Chartreuse, Benedictine, Vermouth, and Dubonnet. Gin and absinthe distillation processes also employ angelica.

Helps release emotional stress

To relieve stress and anxiety using angelica oil, diffuse 5 drops at home or at work. You can use it alone or mix it with lavender essential oil. For a faster effect, inhale the oil directly from the bottle or apply 1-2 drops topically to the temples, nape of the neck or wrists.

Helps relieve cough

Angelica essential oil is an excellent antispasmodic and has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of the trachea, which helps relieve coughing. It also has an expectorant effect and

stimulates the expulsion of thick secretions from the lungs and bronchial passages. Angelica essential oil also exhibits antimicrobial properties, so it acts as a natural immune booster.

To relieve a cough, mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 4-5 drops of angelica essential oil and add to 1 liter of hot water for 10 minutes and inhale the steam.

Acts as a digestive tonic

There are many mechanisms by which angelica oil supports digestion and overall gastrointestinal health. It can help stimulate the release of bile, gastric and pancreatic juices, relax intestinal smooth muscle and promote the passage of painful gas through the digestive system. To relieve gastrointestinal complaints, mix 3-4 drops of angelica root essential oil with 20 ml. carrier oil, then massage the mixture into the skin of the abdomen.

Supports detoxification processes in the body

Angelica essential oil is among the most effective diuretic essential oils. The oil has a beneficial effect by strengthening the filtering function of the kidneys and by increasing the amount of potassium, sodium and chlorine excreted. In addition, "angel oil" promotes sweating and cleansing the body of microorganisms and toxins through the sweat glands. These properties help relieve symptoms related to the accumulation of toxins in the body such as rheumatism, arthritis and gout.

It has a beneficial effect on women's health

Due to its ability to quickly and effectively remove stress and tension, to calm and balance, angelica essential oil helps to reduce stress hormone levels and thereby helps to regulate hormonal balance in a natural way. In case of painful menstruation, it helps to remove painful sensations and reduces cramps. It supports the female organism during menopause by helping to reduce the frequency and intensity of "hot flashes".

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF ANGELICA OIL

A comparative pilot study evaluated the effect of black pepper essential oil and angelica essential oil on nicotine dependence. 20 American college students (smokers) placed 1 drop of black pepper essential oil or 1 drop of angelica essential oil on a handkerchief and inhaled for 2 min each time they experienced an extreme nicotine craving (dry inhalation).

In a diary, the tested students noted, on a scale of 0-10, how strong their craving for nicotine was before inhaling the oils and how long it took until the next nicotine use. Results indicated that both oils reduced nicotine cravings and allowed for a longer delay before the next use of cigarettes. In India, angelica root is traditionally used to help treat epilepsy. An animal experimental model shows that angelica root essential oil has an anticonvulsant effect. The anticonvulsant effect may be due to the presence of terpenes in the essential oil.
