CLARY SAGE - A LITTLE HISTORY

Salvia sclarea or the so-called clary sage is a biennial or perennial plant. Data on its medicinal use can be found in the works of Theophrastus (4th century BC), Dioscorides (1st century BC) and Pliny the Elder (1st century BC). The herb was actively present at the Dionysian feasts - it saved from melancholy, boredom, quiet apathy and helped to bring joy and euphoria without developing addiction. The Romans called salvia sclarea "herba sacra" or "sacred herb". In the past, it was added for natural aroma to wormwood and other types of wine. The herb helped priests enter a trance during religious rituals. In small doses of cocktails with salvia sclarea, the English discovered its relaxing effect, and in milk decoctions from the leaves - an easy way to remove foreign bodies that got into the eye, and in teas from its seeds - the most successful medicine against weakening vision. Hence her name "clear eye" or "clear eye" - Clary Sage. The botanist N. Kylpepper described the medicinal herb as a miraculous relaxant and calming agent.

Since the seeds of the plant have a slimy coating, the old herbalists recommended placing a seed in the eye when a foreign body is lodged in it, so that the seed adheres to the foreign body and facilitates its removal. This practice was noted by Nicholas Culpeper in his Complete Herbal (1653), who called the plant "Clary Sage". Clary sage is used as an ingredient in the production of wine and beer. In 16th century Germany, sclarea infused with elderflowers was added to Rhine wines to produce a more potent variety known as Muscatel.

In 1577, the botanist I. Bock recommended Salvia sclarea as a means of increasing female libido and improving reproductive abilities in women. As modern research shows, in its structure, salvia sclarea is similar to female sex hormones - estrogens, and therefore exhibits a similar effect in the body. It is used in the initial phases of menopause to eliminate hormonal deficiency and emotional disorders, as well as in premenstrual syndrome. The scent of salvia sclarea is the scent of freedom, joy and relaxation - the scent of the Spirit.

Improves mood and brings a sense of harmony and peace of mind

Clary sage essential oil is particularly rich in mood-enhancing esters (up to 80%, especially linalyl acetate, etc.) and provides good mood and even euphoric joy. The aroma of the oil stimulates the brain to work better and favorably affects the energy exchange between emotions and thought. Encourages creativity and imagination - ideal for creative work. Depending on the concentration, its effects can cause excitement, euphoria or calmness. Salvia sclarea essential oil also helps with relaxation, relieves anxiety and depression. Creates a feeling of long-lasting inner harmony and peace of mind.

Relieves menstrual discomfort

Salvia sclarea essential oil has proven highly effective active ingredients that help to restore menstrual cycle disorders, to soothe and reduce pain and relieve menstrual cramps. There are two main reasons why clary sage essential oil is considered a natural remedy for menstrual discomfort. The first reason is that the oil is rich in compounds such as linalyl acetate and linalool, which have been studied for potential anti-inflammatory properties. Since inflammation plays an essential role in menstrual cramps, the anti-inflammatory properties of salvia sclarea help reduce painful contractions. The second reason is that the oil improves overall blood circulation, including in the uterus. As a result, increased blood flow to the uterus helps relieve pain. In addition to all of this, research has confirmed that massage with salvia sclarea essential oil (combined with lavender and marjoram oil) is effective in reducing the duration of menstrual pain and cramps.

Maintains hormonal balance

Clary sage (salvia sclarea) essential oil is well known for harmonizing estrogen levels and as a result supporting overall female health. Thanks to its estrogen-like effect, the healing oil harmonizes biological rhythms, calms the nerves and reduces the rush of sudden hot flashes and sweating during menopause. Contains natural phytoestrogens. One of the chemical components of sage oil is sclareol - it has the ability to "mimic" the effects of the hormone estrogen in the body. For this reason, the essential oil can be effective in reducing some of the symptoms of menopause. Some research shows that when applied to the soles of the feet or wrists, the essential oil can relieve hot flashes and relax the senses. High levels of stress and cortisol can lower insulin levels, cause irregular cycles, impair fertility, accelerate weight gain, contribute to adrenal fatigue, and more. Inhaling clary sage oil is a great way to enjoy its benefits. You can use an essential oil diffuser or add a few drops of the oil to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam. The plant's floral aroma will help calm your mind, and its anti-inflammatory properties will help relieve headaches and promote relaxation and restful sleep.

Reduces stress levels

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) essential oil can induce a feeling of relaxation. Research shows that inhaling salvia sclarea can lower cortisol levels by up to 36%. In addition, salvia sclarea is often used to induce an overall sense of relaxation. Since cortisol and stress can negatively affect hormonal balance, its use can help address these underlying issues.

Supports healthy skin, hair and nails

Calary sage essential oil is suitable for all skin types, especially oily, irritated and mature skin. The oil helps regulate sebum production, mattifies oily, shine-prone skin and soothes inflamed and reddened sensitive skin. As an important active ingredient, the vegetable ester linalyl acetate soothes skin inflammations and regulates the disturbed lipid balance of dry skin. In addition, its antibacterial activity limits the proliferation of microorganisms that play a role in acne, such as Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis.

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF CLARY SAGE

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine reports that women who massaged their abdomens with salvia sclarea-based aromatic oil had a significant reduction in menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea symptoms. Salvia sclarea oil may even ease labor pain, as the journal Complementary Therapies in Nursing and Midwifery reported in 2000.

A study published in Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. investigating the pain-relieving effects of aromatherapy massage and acetaminophen on menstrual pain in girls reported that massage with the essential oils of clary sage, marjoram, cinnamon, ginger, and geranium diluted in almond oil was significantly more effective in reducing menstrual pain than using acetaminophen.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research found that inhaling clary sage oil helped reduce cortisol levels by 36% and improve thyroid hormone levels. The study included 22 postmenopausal women, some of whom had been diagnosed with depression. The result of the study shows that salvia sclarea oil has a good effect on lowering cortisol and has an anti-depressant, mood-enhancing effect.

I mixed a few drops of Essences Bulgaria Clary Sage into my shampoo. It creates a wonderful scent (it's strong straight from the bottle, but earthy and refreshing when diluted). The aroma is relaxing. PLUS - I've noticed that I'm now losing less hair when I wash my hair. This is a problem that I've had for some time, so I'm hopeful that this Clary Sage is my answer. Either way - the oil is the real deal and a few drops go a long way. This bottle will last. Great stuff
