St. John’s wort - a little history
The yellow St. John's wort bears the popular names: Christ's blood, Christ's miracle worker, bellflower and cutwort. The medicinal herb oozes red juice, which creates the strange feeling that it has drops of blood in it. Hypericum comes from the Greek word "hyperikon" which is split into "hyper" meaning "end" and "eikon" meaning "image or apparition". This is a reference to the belief that this herb has such a powerful influence against evil spirits that even a whiff of it will make them disappear. It is said that in the presence of such a sunny herb, no evil can exist.
St. John's wort has been known to mankind since ancient times as a magical herb that naturally infuses light, vitality and energy into the human body and exerts a powerful influence on body and spirit. Legend has it that in the first century the early Christians named the herb St. John's Wort (St. John's Wort) because it bloomed on June 24, the day marking the birth of St. John the Baptist. In folk beliefs, the herb is a symbol of the sun and the summer solstice.
St. John's wort is especially valued for its hypericin content - the strongest natural antidepressant known to science - and has been successfully used to treat depressive conditions, anxiety, restlessness, fear neurosis, insomnia, neurasthenia, restless sleep, stomachaches of nervous origin and mental exhaustion. The chemical hyperforin found in St. John's wort may be useful in treating alcoholism.
Helps fight depression and anxiety
Depression is an increasingly common illness associated with a wide range of emotional, cognitive and physical symptoms. These symptoms have a negative impact on everyday life. Most antidepressants have numerous side effects. For this reason, more and more people are turning to nature. St. John's wort oil works as an alternative to chemical antidepressants.
It is used for mild to moderate depression. Research proves that its effectiveness in the fight against depression is due to its slower but, at the same time, longer-lasting effect, compared to classic antidepressant drugs, and most importantly - no side effects. Especially during the colder, dreary months, St. John's wort oil is a perfect stimulant because it eases the symptoms of seasonal depression and improves mood. Mix 3 to 5 drops with carrier oil and massage into temples and back of neck.
Improves mood and increases energy
Acting directly on the brain's olfactory system, inhaling St. John's wort oil can have an immediate positive effect on mood and serve as a mild-acting natural anti-depressant. To improve mood and boost energy levels, diffuse the oil or apply 1 to 3 drops topically to the temples, wrists, back of the neck, or soles of the feet, or add to a warm bath.
Soothes skin irritations and inflammations
Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and regenerative properties, St. John's wort oil has the ability to soothe skin irritations and inflammations. It is often used to treat many specific skin imperfections, wounds, injuries, burns and scars. It can help with inflamed, cracked, scaly and dry skin.
Fights wrinkles and aging skin
Topical application of St. John's wort oil can reduce the appearance of signs of aging. Its antioxidant potential suggests benefits against free radicals that cause premature skin aging. In addition, it nourishes and moisturizes the skin and is often used in face creams and serums. Use St. John's wort oil to rejuvenate your skin and enjoy a healthy and glowing complexion. Add 1 to 3 drops of St. John's wort oil to a lip balm, face wash, or lotion to fight wrinkles.
It has an anti-inflammatory effect
St. John's wort essential oil's soothing nature and rich concentration of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents make it ideal for relieving painful arthritis pain, in addition to gout, joint discomfort, and muscle pain. For this reason, the oil is often used for massage for neuralgia, sciatica, rheumatism, arthritis and muscle pain. Athletes often use it for restorative massages of muscles, tendons and tissues. Its topical use reduces pain, helps soothe tired, inflamed, sore muscles and swollen joints, and can inhibit contractions and spasms that lead to cramps. Apply 3 to 5 drops to the affected area or add 5 to 10 drops to a warm Epsom salt bath.
MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF ST. JOHN’S WORT OIL
A clinical study published in Biomolecules 2020 Jun evaluated the chemical composition and immunomodulatory activity of Hypericum perforatum essential oils. It has been reported that the essential oils isolated from the leaves of H. perforatum contain a large amount of sesquiterpenes and that these essential oils are potent inhibitors of human neutrophil responses. In addition, the constituents of the essential oil: germacrene D, β-caryophyllene and α-humulene are also potent inhibitors of human neutrophils. The researchers concluded that suppressing neutrophils has an anti-inflammatory effect. Studies are currently underway to evaluate the potential of St. John's wort oil as a therapeutic agent for various diseases with immune and/or inflammatory mechanisms.
A study on the antibacterial activity of Hypericum perforatum, published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, evaluated the antimicrobial activity of St. John's wort oil against a number of bacterial and fungal strains. In the course of research, St. John's wort oil has been reported to possess a wide range of biological and pharmacological effects such as antidepressant effects, wound healing, antiviral and antimicrobial activity. Based on the chemical and pharmacological characteristics of H. perforatum, the researchers concluded that this species has beneficial therapeutic properties and has the potential to be used as an effective adaptogenic herbal medicine.
An experiment aims to formulate a new phytotherapeutic ointment based on the essential oil of Hypericum perforatum included in the new ointment base. The study of the healing properties of the ointment is carried out in in vivo experimental models of wound healing on rats. Local treatment is carried out daily for 21 days. The results show that the tested new ointment has a significant wound healing effect on skin injuries and is safe to use.
Topical preparations of St. John's wort as oils or tinctures are used to treat minor wounds and burns, sunburns, abrasions, bruises, contusions, ulcers, myalgia, and more. Pharmacological studies support use in these areas.
