Silver Fir

The silver fir (Abies alba) is an evergreen conifer from the pine family (Pinaceae), reaching heights of up to 60 m and notable longevity of around 400 years. It is found in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North and Central America—almost everywhere in mountainous regions at elevations up to 1,800 m. The fir’s root system is highly developed and penetrates deep into the soil—sometimes even down to 15 meters. Because of this, the common fir cannot be uprooted by the wind. The cones are sessile and stand upright on the branch; they do not hang as in other conifer species.
In mythology, the fir was considered a sacred tree—an embodiment of harmony, cosmic order, and beautiful family relationships. In antiquity it was perceived as the “axis of the world.” Viewed from above, the fir represents a kind of projection of the Universe and the movement of the celestial bodies. The name “ela” (fir) is an etymological analogue of the concept “Yule,” with which the ancient Celts designated the day of the winter solstice.
The symbolism of the silver fir is linked to love as the highest feeling. The scent of fir helps people with a hard shell and a soft core, fostering emotional maturation. It is the embodiment of beauty, strength, and majesty, and a bearer of divine light. Its very appearance radiates dignity and inspires respect—hence it is called the “Queen of the Forest.” Fir branches symbolize pagan beliefs, the victory of light over darkness, and the Christmas spirit.
The energy of the silver fir enables the tree to absorb pain in inflammatory processes. It very selectively draws off negative energy from a person and recharges them with the pure natural energy flow of its own bioenergy. In doing so, the silver fir helps improve well-being, relieve stress, and heal various ailments.
Traditional healers believe that resin from the silver fir carries a charge of solar and earthly energy. According to Native American and Altai healers, this natural medicine can heal not only the body but also the human soul. The resinous mass is a true natural antibiotic. It has bactericidal properties; once applied to a wound or scratch, it suppresses bacterial growth. Because of its very sticky nature, the resin can be applied directly to a bleeding cut to help stop the flow of blood and close the wound.
The silver fir radiates HEALTH around itself. Majestic and proud, withstanding severe cold, wind, and snow, the silver fir is a true survivor among tree species. It needs its oils and resins—serving as warming energies—to endure the extreme climatic conditions to which it is often subjected. This evergreen conifer shows that even in times of the least sunlight, one can still draw strength from the earth and the light of the sun in order to continue growing and developing.
This is why it is no surprise that essential oil of silver fir has the power to protect against seasonal illnesses such as colds and flu, and has potent antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties that provide the necessary boost of energy to strengthen the immune system. The branches, needles, and seeds of the silver fir, when fresh, also find application in folk medicine as a natural remedy for improving respiratory conditions and other diseases of the respiratory organs, as well as for exhausted bodies convalescing after illness.
